Bio

Bio

Angella (Angie) Goetz, RN, MNEd, CIC, served as an infection control practitioner at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center for 16 years before retiring in 1997. During the last 6 years, she was also the director of the IV Therapy Team and an adjunct graduate instructor at the University of Pittsburgh School of
Nursing.

Goetz has published more than 40 papers on Legionella, nosocomial Legionnaires’ disease, MRSA, pseudomonas aeruginosa, and other infectious diseases in peer-reviewed journals. She also served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Infection Control and Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology. In addition, Goetz has given lectures and presented posters on infection prevention at local, state and national conferences.

While at the VA, Goetz established and directed the first intraveneous therapy team. She was instrumental in reorganizing the Employee Health Program and aided in establishing an AIDS clinic,
in which she was the primary facilitator for AIDS issues for both patient care and employee protection.

Throughout the course of her career, she served on numerous advisory boards including the Veterans Affairs Infection Control Committee, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine AIDS Task Force, and was board director for the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology. Goetz is the recipient of numerous awards for her contributions to infection control. In 2002 she was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from The Association of Professionals in Infection Control and
Epidemiology.

A graduate of the Allegheny General Hospital School of Nursing as well as the University of Pittsburgh, Goetz, entered the nursing profession in 1956. Throughout her career she served as a staff and head nurse, a team leader, and instructor in Pittsburgh-based Allegheny General Hospital and the Western Pennsylvania Hospital, as well as hospitals in Portland, Ore., and El Paso, Tex.
